August
Speaker: Dr Rob Burrell
When: Wednesday, 9 August (7pm NZST / 5pm AEST)
Topic: Palliative Medicine and Planetary Health - A glimpse of how end of life care fits within climate change, sustainability, and carbon reduction.
Summary: Rob is an an anesthetist at Middlemore Hospital. More importantly to him, he’s a husband and a father. He’d like to be a good ancestor. In his 30 years of passing gas (!), Rob has come to appreciate that health care one patient at a time isn’t going to change the world. He now has a very part time role as Clinical Lead on the Climate Change Working Group. Despite his glossophobia, and his hospital-centric viewpoint, he will attempt to bring a sustainability context to palliative care.

September
Speakers: Carol McAllum and Maria Mariotti
When: Wednesday, 6 September (time TBC)
Topic: Honohono Tatoa Katoa – creating compassionate communities. Is it our business?
Overview and Bios:
Carol McAllum is lead/Kaitiaki Honohono Tatou Katoa and Director Quality & Partnerships, Mercy Hospice. Originally a general practitioner, Carol transitoned to palliative care more than 20 years ago. From her immersion in hospital, hospice inpatient and hospice community palliative medicine specialist roles, she believes that ‘palliative care’ is undergoing ‘growing pains’. A revolution is needed. Can a hospice join the compassionate communities movement, which is underpinned by the public health palliative care approach?
Maria Mariotti is Poutakawaenga/Project Manager & Community Liaison for Honohono Tatou Katoa. Having trained orginally as an engineer, Maria soon abandoned the corporate world and has been working in different communities in different parts of the world ever since. Maria knows the power of connection and community. She is the founder of Curious Kids, and before joining Mercy Hospice in December 2022, worked at Auckland Hospital to introduce and run the compassionate companions initiative.
